The Northwoods Honor Flight Benefit is a dedicated fundraising initiative supporting the Never Forgotten Honor Flight organization, which serves Veterans in the north and central regions of Wisconsin. The primary mission is to provide local Veterans with the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and experience the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. Each trip is a profound experience for our local Veterans –a day of remembrance, camaraderie, and appreciation. Through generous community support, we raise the necessary funds to cover flights, meals, and accommodations, ensuring that these heroes can participate at no cost.
Founded by passionate community members, we host a variety of fundraising events from summer through late fall. From cookout benefits to golf outings, these events provide crucial financial support while bringing the community together with a shared commitment to honor our Veterans. We believe that recognizing the bravery and dedication of our service members is a collective responsibility. Whether you are a Veteran, a supporter, or someone who wants to make a difference, we invite you to get involved. By joining us, you can help create lasting memories for local Veterans and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten. The local Honor Guard plays a significant role in the Northwoods Honor Flight Benefit organization. Their presence adds a profound sense of respect and ceremony to our events, serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by our Veterans and ensuring each event is conducted with the utmost respect and honor for those who have served our country.
There are many ways to support the Northwoods Honor Flight Benefit:
The Never Forgotten Honor Flight, based in Wausau, Wisconsin, was established in November 2009 with a mission to honor local Veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War by flying them to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials built in their honor. As an affiliate of the national Honor Flight Network, which began in 2005, the Never Forgotten Honor Flight has provided thousands of local Veterans with a once-in-a-lifetime experience to reflect on their service, bond with fellow Veterans, and receive the gratitude they so deeply deserve.
To be eligible for a flight, a Veteran must have served in the United States military before May 7, 1975, with an honorable or general discharge. Veterans are prioritized based on their era of service, with World War II Veterans given the highest priority. Terminally ill Veterans, regardless of service era, also receive priority consideration.
Each Honor Flight trip is a one-day journey to Washington, D.C., where Veterans visit:
The entire trip is organized by volunteers, funded by private donations, and provided at no cost to Veterans. There is no government funding and making community contributions is essential to keeping this mission alive.
